Moonshot Event in MLB The Show 21 Features Greinke and Cespedes

One of the more infamous events is back in MLB The Show 21: the Moonshot Event. This one has fans as well as detractors, but the nice part this year is at least there is a parallel system in place to level up hitters as you go through games full of chaos. This event is common pitchers versus any hitters, and it’s locked at Coors Field. There are a lot of great rewards available if you can put together wins. These include various Headliners packs, Home Run Derby Yoenis Cespedes, Signature Series Zack Greinke, and Future Stars Luis Campusano. However, I’m not sure if any of the three players will reach Future Stars Jasson Dominguez levels.

If you’re looking for what common pitchers to use, content creator Scuffy has a helpful starting point:

Moonshot Event

Moonshot Event

  • Any hitters
  • Common pitchers
  • 99 overall max team overall
  • 3-inning games
  • All-Star difficulty
  • Stadium locked at Coors Field (but you don’t need to own Coors Field)
  • All entries are free

This Moonshot Event will have multiple parts, but part one ends on July 15.

Split Squad One

  • National League pitchers and infield
  • American League outfielders
  • Any All-Star players
  • 3-inning games with quick counts
  • Difficulty: All-Star
  • All entries are free

Split Squad One ends on Jully 22.

Split Squad Two

  • American League pitchers and infield
  • National League outfielders
  • Any All-Star players
  • 3-inning games with quick counts
  • Difficulty: All-Star
  • All entries are free

Ends on July 27, and this is probably the last portion of the event to chase Cespedes and the rest.

Future Stars Luis Campusano has 100+ ratings against LHP to go with 90 vision. He is a right-handed catcher with 84 arm strength and overall solid skills on offense and defense. This is a perfectly solid catcher option if you’re looking to change things up, but he’s not a tier one catcher.

  • 25 wins – Ballin’ Is A Habit pack
  • 27 wins – 3,000 stubs, Kansas City Royals Alternate Home 2003 uniform
  • 30 wins – Signature Series Zack Greinke

Folks should be familiar with Signature Series Zack Greinke at this point — or some other elite version of him. Some folks adore him, and some folks really struggle with him. Here he has a 96 mph fastball to go with his 70 mph curveball and 83 mph changeup to keep hitters off balance. He has a slider and 2-seam fastball to mix into the equation as well. The fastball, slider, changeup are the three pitches he has 90+ control of, and then his pitch break is over 90 on the slider and changeup. I worry a bit about the effectiveness of this card, but you always have to sort of dabble with Greinke to figure it out for sure.

  • 35 wins – The Show pack (x10)
  • 37 wins – 4,000 stubs, Oakland Athletics Home 1925 uniform
  • 40 wins – Home Run Derby Yoenis Cespedes

The Home Run Derby Yoenis Cespedes card was in The Show last year. It was not one of the most popular cards from the set, but you’re getting 112 power vs. RHP, and 122 power vs. LHP as the main selling points. His arm strength is a 90, and he can play all three outfield positions. I have used Cespedes a lot in the past, but I did not love his first gold card this year. However, I still trust him swing enough to give this card a legitimate shot to win me over.
