Matchpoint – Tennis Championships is a tennis game from Kalypso Media and Torus Games that is coming in Spring 2022. Utilizing the Unity engine, it will be on all major consoles and PC. On top of that, they wanted to give OS fans a look at some of what to expect in this exclusive gameplay trailer.

In the video, you can scope out some of the creation suite, how the career mode will be structured, and you can see the gameplay and graphics in snippets. My initial reaction is that I get some Top Spin vibes from what’s on display here, and I would call that a positive. The roster is going to include 16 real tennis pros. Most of the heavy hitters are absent, but the men’s side does look a little stronger with top 10 players like Medvedev, Rublev, and Ruud. On the women’s side, the biggest name is arguably Victoria Azarenka, albeit the best ranked player on the women’s side in Matchpoint is Garbine Muguruza.

Features wise, it looks like there should be a relatively deep career mode here, with one of the cooler things that stands out so far being your ability to spot weaknesses of your opponents as you scout them. You’ll also customize your pro (real gear is included) and skill up during your journey to the top.

All in all, while the competition in the tennis genre is relatively fierce by today’s standards, there is certainly still space for a game like Matchpoint – Tennis Championships to find a home on consoles and PC. With folks like EA and 2K staying out of tennis, it’s meant various developers have shown up on PC and consoles through the years to try and fill that void. They have done so to varying degrees of success, so it will be interesting to see where Matchpoint ends up on that spectrum when it releases in Spring 2022.
