MLB The Show 21 - Headliners Set 9 Breakout Eddie Mathews
Headliners Set 9 Breakout Eddie Mathews has replaced Prime A.J. Burnett in Headliners packs. Eddie Mathews is a 93 overall.
This Eddie Matthews card art has become a classic in The Show through the last couple years so it’s good to see it back once more. Mathews has a lot of fans out there, and his smooth lefty swing is where that starts. Mathews also tends to have really good hitting stats with iffy fielding stats, which probably helps his cause since defense still takes a backseat to offense in The Show. Plus, he can play at 3B, so it’s never a bad thing getting another high-level hitter there.
Mathews has 86 contact vs. RHP, 84 contact vs. LHP, 94 power vs. RHP, and 109 power vs. LHP. He has 85 vision, 73 fielding, and 53 speed. He feels a little more balanced than I remember hitting-wise since I felt like in the past his platoon splits were a little more extreme, but I could be wrong there. He joins an increasingly stacked group at 3B that includes George Brett, Kyle Seager, Mike Schmidt, Justin Turner, Chipper Jones, Miguel Cabrera, and Josh Donaldson. Some of those players are obviously easier to acquire than others, so Eddie probably becomes a nice middle ground for some folks.

The odds on the Headliners packs remain the same as always, so good luck if you try getting him in packs as you’ll have a 1:10 chance at a diamond, albeit that diamond might not be Breakout Eddie Mathews.
