F1 22 Interview Provides Details on Improved Physics, Handling, Tire Models, Pits & More

RedBull has posted their interview with F1 22 senior creative director Lee Mather as he provides details on the improved physics, handling, tire models, pits and much more. Mather has been on the F1 team since F1 2010 as a member of the design team.

“We’ve concentrated on replicating the rules as they are for the cars this year – they’re a little heavier, the air is generated more under-body than it is over-body, and you’ve got larger wheels and tire packages with more unsprung mass.”

Additionally, the game physics engine has been improved in order to improve tire model suspension. As a result, the car’s front end will feel more defined and the players will experience slick tires and varying degrees of grip.

The player may also choose to take full control of the formation laps or, in a new mode offered this year, drive the car into the pit box and position it however they wish, priming the car for an offensive or defensive start.

“We wanted to give players the opportunity to pull into their pit box,” says Mather, “There’s a timing game involved, and you have to train your team.” For example, if you’ve not focused on training your pit crew, their timing may be a little off, or they may make errors that will impact the rest of the race.
