EA's Skate Beta Reportedly Includes Loot Boxes and New Currency
According to a report from Insider-Gaming the most recent beta for EA Skate includes loot boxes and new currency. The developers mentioned the game would not feature loot boxes back in July, but a lot can happen during development. The team mentioned new features and areas will be free but cosmetics and unique items would come at a cost.
That cost seems to be coming in the form of a new currency called Stars. These Stars can be obtained by completing challenges. The more difficult the challenge, the more Stars you could receive. More Stars, more loot boxes. At the moment, loot boxes are priced between 2 and 3 Stars, with 3 Star loot boxes containing more desirable items.
There are five individual items in each loot box, and you can view all of them before purchasing, but only one will be received. The odds of receiving a particular item are not presented and duplicate items can be unlocked. Eventually, Taps or another form of game currency will be available for purchase to obtain more Stars, according to testers.
EA Skate doesn’t have a release date and we assume these loot boxes will be turned off and on numerous times as the beta continues. I’d assume they will be included whenever the full game is released but nothing has been confirmed. Skate will be free-to-play so something like this is to be expected. Let’s just hope they don’t forget about the actual game and try to nickel and dime everything.
